What is the Yates Junior Landcare Watermelon Challenge?
The Yates Junior Landcare Watermelon Challenge is a competition for Australian kids, which runs from July 2011 to February 2012. Participants will be sent a free packet of Yates watermelon seeds and attempt to grow the heaviest watermelon over the summer months. There will also be a competition for the most creative photograph of a watermelon or watermelon plant.
Back to the topWhat is Junior Landcare?
Junior Landcare is Landcare Australia’s kids program that aims to teach children about sustainability and the environment in a fun, hands-on way. A major part of Junior Landcare is its grants program that provides funding to schools and youth groups to help them partake in environmental activities and education. Junior Landcare also regularly runs challenges and competitions to help teach kids about how they can be more sustainable. Back to the topCan I take part in the Challenge?
There are two categories in which one can register: individual/family and school/youth group. For further details about eligibility, see point 3 in the Terms and Conditions. Back to the topCan I register more than one person with the same email address?
No. The email address is the unique identifier of participants. This helps restrict people from taking advantage of the competition and ordering many packets of seeds for themselves under different names (especially when there is a limited supply of seeds).Children from the same family can register separately if they wish; however, they will each need a unique email address and need to upload weights and photos for each individual registrant. It is recommended that children from the same family in the same household should enter the competition together, as a family.
Back to the topWhen do registrations close?
Registrations are open until Sunday 25th September 2011 5pm EST, but may close sooner if the maximum of 12,000 packets of seeds is reached. Back to the topWhen will I receive my seeds?
If you have registered, seeds will be posted to all participants in early October 2011. Back to the topAre the seeds really free?
Yes. Yates is supplying the seeds for free to help support Junior Landcare. Back to the topI already have watermelon seeds – can I use them instead?
No. All participants in the competition must use the seeds provided to them by Yates. Back to the topMy seeds haven’t arrived, can I have more?
Unfortunately we cannot send any replacement seeds under any circumstances. Seeds will be posted to the address provided on the registration form at the end of September. As a not-for-profit organisation we only have a limited amount of donated seeds and don’t have the supply to send more than one packet per entrant. Please ensure your postage details are written correctly on the registration form. If you are using a school address ensure that you include the name of the school in the address. Back to the topWhat do I do after I have planted my seeds?
Please refer to the downloadable Project Kit for tips to help you grow your watermelons sustainably. Back to the topWhen do I have to register my watermelon measurements and photographs?
The measurements and photographs of your watermelon needs to be registered on the Yates Junior Landcare Watermelon Challenge website when your watermelon has matured. This can be done any time up until the end of the competition. The heaviest watermelon from both categories will be verified at the end of February and the heaviest measurements recorded will be the final winners.
Back to the topWhat happens if one or more watermelons weigh the same?
If this is the case then the watermelons will be judges by their circumference, and the biggest will be the winner. Back to the topWhat happens if I forget my log-in details?
Enter your e-mail address on the Yates Junior Landcare Watermelon Challenge website and your password will be e-mailed to you. Back to the topWhat happens if I forget to log weights and photo?
If you forget to register the measurements and upload photographs of your watermelon you risk invalidating your entry. This decision is at the discretion of Junior Landcare. We cannot judge entries that are not entered. Back to the topWhen does the competition finish?
Final watermelon measurements and photographs need to be logged no later than 5pm (EST), Friday 24th February 2012. Back to the topWhen will the winner be announced?
The winners will be announced Monday, March 5th 2012. Back to the topWhy didn’t my watermelons grow?
There are numerous reasons that could cause your seeds not to grow; however, in general watermelons need full sun and should be watered regularly. To give yourself the best chance of success, you should carefully read the Project Kit and other resources on this site… It is a Challenge after all.And remember, you can always enter the best photo competition with the most creative photograph of your watermelon!
